‘Get Started With Songwriting’ is three 1-hour hands-on taster sessions providing an inspiring introduction into the world of songwriting. During the workshops you will be lead through short writing exercises and engaging composition tasks to get the creative juices flowing. The workshops will be delivered in a friendly and creative learning environment. All three sessions will focus on useful songwriting tools that you can take home to develop your own writing. Being able to play an instrument is an advantage but not a must. Bring along yourself, your voice and your curiosity. The class size is limited to 12 participants.
Session 1 - 13 April : ‘Getting started with lyric writing’
In the first session we will focus on how you can get started writing your first lines. This will include thinking about form, rhymes and repetitions. NB: Bring a selection of three book titles to the workshop. We will use these in a creative writing exercise as a starting point for your songwriting.
Session 2 - 20 April: ‘Getting started with melody and sound shaping’
In the second session we will focus on how you can get started composing melodies for your lyrics. You will be introduced to thinking about space, rhythm and repetition. This is an exciting stage in the songwriting process where we will explore how to write melodies that works in tandem with the lyrics so that the two eventually become one item – a song.
Session 3 - 27 April: ‘Getting your song ready for performance’
In the third session we will focus on how to bring the elements of lyric writing and composition together. We will look at ways to get your song ready for performance. The workshop will focus on the different artistic choices you can make when ‘clothing’ your song in an arrangement. You will be introduced to thinking about form, length, sound and style.
