Fine Art

Our fine art collection comprises just over 1,200 works of art. The collection is almost evenly divided between oil painting and works on paper and includes a small number of pieces of sculpture. The collection’s strength lies primarily in the works of the 19th and early 20th centuries but includes some notable 18th century as well as contemporary works.

The heart of the collection was developed at Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery and is associated with J.W. Blyth, industrialist, collector and Convener of the Art Gallery’s sub-committee for almost four decades.

The collections cover groups of work by Scottish artists such as the Glasgow Boys and the Edinburgh School as well as a small but important range of works by European and English artists. These include Lowry, Boudin and Fantin-Latour alongside a number of exceptional works from the Camden Town Group. Of greatest note is a group of thirty-nine oils and seven drawings by Scottish Colourist S.J. Peploe and thirty one oils and watercolours by William McTaggart.

Our collection continues to grow. In the recent years we have acquired new artworks by leading contemporary Scottish artists such as John Bellany, Alison Watt, Frances Walker, Ken Currie, Nathan Coley and many more.

Many of our artworks can be viewed on Art UK. You can also purchase prints of some of these from their website. Click on the Art UK icon below to find out more.
