Since the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was formed in 1824, ordinary people have formed crews and funded the kit and lifeboats to save lives at sea. This year we commemorate the past, celebrate the lifesavers of today and inspire those of the future.
Once, volunteers launched wooden lifeboats with oars and sails and now they’re saving lives on motor-powered all-weather lifeboats with state-of-the-art technology and communications. In every single one of those lifeboats, the crew have been the same: unwilling to stand by and do nothing when people are in trouble. And the generosity of our supporters hasn’t changed either. It’s a powerful combination of kindness and courage – together the RNLI has saved more than 144,000 lives.
To mark their 200th birthday we are displaying a special collection of RNLI objects in our Museum and hosting various RNLI themed events (check out our Facebook page for more information). Come visit us and find out more about the amazing work of the RNLI.
