“Letters from the Lighthouse” is an absolute page turner and a brilliant depiction of war, the plight of refugees and what it means to be family. There are excellent links to World War 2 and the current situation with Syrian refugees.

In February 1941, Olive and her little brother are evacuated from London to a wee village on the Devon Coast. World War 2 is in full flow and nothing is at it seems. Olive’s beloved sister has disappeared after been seen meeting a mysterious man, Olive finds a coded note in her sister’s coat pocket and there are things her Mum is keeping from her. Things are not much different in Budmouth Point – everyone is keeping secrets and sending messages and the lighthouse, they are sent to live in, is full of hidden food and clothes.

As Olive gets used to village life and gets deeper into what is happening, she discovers that her sister, Sukie, is also linked by letters to Budmouth Point and that she seems to be involved in some mysterious and dangerous plan – one that Olive is soon involved in herself.
