Barney wanders to the edge of the disused chalk pit, falls in when the ground gives way and ends up in a kind of cave where he meets Stig.
Barney is a solitary boy, who likes to wander off by himself. On the day he falls into the chalk pit, he meets a strange boy, dressed in animal skins with a lot of tousled hair, who doesn’t speak but only grunts.Barney’s family don’t believe his stories about Stig and think it’s all in his imagination. However for Barney, Stig means being involved in some very exciting adventures.
