Set in AD 79, Mount Vesuvius has just erupted covering the land with volcanic ash. Hundreds of refugees are in a camp south of Stabia, coming to terms with what has happened. If that was not bad enough, children start to go missing from the camp. Flavia Gemina and her friends set out to investigate a powerful man known as Patron.  They undertake a dangerous journey, leading them to the caves and grottoes of Sorrento, where they encounter pirates, slave dealers and death.
