A world of wonders is yours to explore for just two more weeks at a popular Fife visitor attraction.
Intriguing artefacts from six continents have been capturing imaginations at St Andrews Museum since the Explore! exhibition opened in March.
The family-friendly show has been a welcome reminder that you don’t have to venture too far to expand your horizons.
Visitors have been following in the footsteps of intrepid explorers to discover exotic lands and fantastic voyages in this colourful exhibition.
Explore! features a host of intriguing objects from far flung places – including Japan, China, South Africa, India and Australia – and from the depths of the oceans.
“The exhibition takes a sensitive approach to sharing some of OnFife’s eclectic collection of objects from 18th and 19th century exploration,” says museum’s Facility & Services Supervisor, Judith Hunter.
“Artefacts from Africa, Asia and Down Under are displayed alongside naval instruments that enabled explorers to extend the limits of discovery.”
It’s one last chance to feast your eyes on beautiful hand-painted pottery, intricately carved ivory and polished jade.
And to unearth some fascinating facts –who knew there’s more than one type of boomerang; that the oldest surviving map is 2500 years old; or that many famous pirates were women?

Echoes of exploration resound through beautiful works of art such as E.A. Hornell’s Burmese Girls and George Ogilvy Reid’s Smugglers. The Cold North by John Macallum Swan presents a visceral image of the Arctic that reminds us of the fragility of our planet.
“Explore lets you embark on your own voyage of discovery,” says Judith. “Whether it’s learning about polar pioneers or tropical trekkers, it introduces you to objects from a golden era of ground-breaking adventures.”
Explore! Travellers & Trailblazers runs until 17 September at St Andrews Museum, Kinburn Park, Double Dykes Road, St Andrews KY16 9DP. Admission is free.
