What's ON

Revamped venue’s return is just the ticket for theatre lovers

Live performances are returning to Kirkcaldy’s Adam Smith Theatre as part of an enticing array of events promoted by cultural charity OnFife.

The recently refurbished venue is hosting a heady mix of shows that will gladden the hearts of local culture lovers this autumn and winter.

Music and mirth – mingled with drama and dance – are all part of the package as the much-loved venue hosts live events for the first time in three years.

Two of the country’s top comedy acts are making welcome returns – Edinburgh Fringe favourite Craig Hill on 13 October and Fife’s own Daniel Sloss on 27 January.

Drama is part of the mix too. Audiences can savour Wake Up’s enthralling blend of mystery and dark comedy on 6 October and Tron Theatre’s gripping production Moorcrcoft on 20 and 21 October.

Fife-made feature film Dick Dynamite: 1944 marks the return of big screen showings on 28 October and dance spectacular Emerald Storm will set pulses racing on 4 November.

And one of the Kingdom’s cultural treasures – Fife Opera – performs Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana on 10 and 11 November.

For something different, crime expert Professor Jackson brings his insights to true crime with The Myth of Serial Killing Profiling on 25 October and Psychic Medium Stuart Michael on 26 October.

Then the countdown begins for the big one … Little Mermaid and the return of the Adam Smith pantomime on 9 December.

But it’s not all Adam Smith! At Rothes Halls there a great line-up of shows coming up.

On the comedy front, the Weegie Boys bring their talents to comedy with clever twists on Scottish culture in the fast-paced Weegie Hink Ae That on 13 October and then there’s a major treat in store when Carl Hutchinson, one of the funniest stand-ups on the national scene, comes  to town on 1 December – definitely one not to be missed!

Dance fans will be delighted with a wonderful ballet production coming next week with the Crown Ballet Presents Swan Lake on 13 October.

Music is always big at Rothes Halls and this season has something for everyone, from world-class tribute shows like The Wonder of Stevie (25 October) and Johnny Lee Memphis Absolute Elvis (18 November) to King King (17 November) and the Bay City Rollers (16 December). And if you’re looking for a gig to get you into the party mood for an early Christmas night out, get your tickets booked for Los Pacaminos (8 December) – this Tex-Mex / Americana band was formed by pop star Paul Young and you can expect a raucous, fun, foot-stomping night of entertainment.

Younger audiences are covered too with family singalong Artie’s Singing Kettle – Halloween (15 October) and The McDougalls Big Christmas Show (9 December).

Other highlights of the season include an evening with Marti Pellow at Dunfermline’s Carnegie Hall on 21 October and The McDougalls Space Adventure at Lochgelly Centre on 28 October.

“We’ve been longing to welcome everyone back to the Adam Smith Theatre,” says OnFife’s Community Events and Programme Manager, Karen Taylor. “And we’re thrilled that once again audiences will be able to enjoy great nights out at all four of our theatres.”

“Whether you like comedy or classical music, drama or dance, or simply just fancy seeing a film, then we have you covered this autumn.”
