Missal from the 14th Century

This is the altar book of the priest when celebrating Catholic mass. In its original Monastic binding , pig skin on boards with brass clasps. It contains the Canon of the Mass in latin in large lettering, with music and beautiful writing, but has lost the picture of the crucifixion which always precedes the Mass. It is written on 312 leaves of clean vellum, probably about 1400 to 1450.

Later research has shown that this Missal originated in Munster , Germany. It came into George Reid’s possession in 1897 and was left to Dunfermline on George Reid’s death in 1910
