From Liverpool to the Lang Toun: The Beatles 60th anniversary appeal

Lennon and McCartney penned the line: “The Duchess of Kirkcaldy, always smiling and arriving late for tea”.

For any youngsters back in October 1963 lucky enough to glimpse The Beatles arriving at the Carlton Theatre in the town or sneaking around the back to listen to the gig, grins would have stretched from ear to ear. And for those who actually managed to get a ticket, the memories are the stuff of legend that shouldn’t be forgotten.

Which is why the team at Kirkcaldy Galleries are appealing for anyone who remembers that great night to help create a commemorative book that will be preserved by OnFife Archives for posterity.

There will be two weeks of Fab 4 activities in October in the Galleries and online to celebrate the diamond anniversary of gig and as part of this, the team hope to be able to gather first-hand tales of the night and are inviting people to pop in and share their memories.

Helen Stevenson, Venue Manager, explains: “We’d like to hear about people’s experiences of seeing John, Paul, George and Ringo at the Carlton and hearing their songs live for the first time.  Beatlemania transcends generations and we want to celebrate their popularity today as well as 60 years ago.”

You can follow the team’s preparations on Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok.
