This story is about Bruno, a 9 year old boy who lives in Berlin with his parents and his older sister. Bruno and his family are quite well-off and have servants to help them around the house and they have their own bedrooms filled with toys and books. However, this all changes when Bruno’s Mother tells him that the family are moving away.

Bruno is disappointed that he must move and leave his friends behind, but he has no choice. The new house is far away. Bruno notices that from his window he can see another property in the distance which he assumes is a farm.

Bruno is an explorer and decides to see what is beyond the walls of his new home. He finds an escape route through the back yard and is soon out in the wilderness of trees. He eventually comes to a fence and sees a small boy sitting behind it. The boy on the other side of the fence is called Schmuel and he and Bruno become friends.
