What's ON

Book Week filled with thrills promises to be a real page turner

Avid readers are being urged to embrace a spirit of adventure as OnFife Libraries stage a series of events celebrating Book Week Scotland.

Book lovers of all ages are being encouraged to read outside their comfort zone with a programme that includes author visits and a puppet show.

Other attractions include a book launch and five days of intriguing texts for OnFife’s Closed Facebook Group, which is embarking on A Taste of Reading Adventure.

Getting the week underway is an eagerly anticipated visit of author Mike Nicholson and the Mystery Museum Squad to Kirkcaldy Galleries on Tuesday 14 November.

This free, family event in Café Wemyss offers an ideal opportunity to check out the Mystery Squad’s underground HQ and the many cases they have solved.

Young adventurers can enjoy fun activities that include story writing inspired by museum objects … and, of course, plenty of bad jokes to boost the feelgood factor.

The event, which starts at 3.30pm, is suitable for ages 7 to 9. Children aged under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be booked at the venue or by calling 01592 583206.

Author Alan Windam’s loveable robot creation, One Button Benny, is no pushover – and his latest adventure sees him coming face to face with a grumpy dinosaur.

Fans of Benny can hear about his thrilling escapade at Cadham Library, Glenrothes, on Tuesday 14 November.

One Button Benny and the Dinosaur Dilemma! promises lots of laughs … and be prepared for an outbreak of robot dancing.

This bookable, free event – aimed at ages 4 and over – takes place from 4.30 to 5.30pm. Children aged 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre presents the marvellous Myths of the Vikings at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries on Saturday 18 November.

This spellbinding performance brings to life tales of Odin, King of the Gods; Thor and his mighty hammer; and Loki – the shape changer, adventurer and mischief maker.

The show, which takes place from 2 to 3pm, is aimed at ages 5 to 12 – those aged 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.

The week of celebration draws to a close with a book launch at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries on Sunday 19 November.

Author Ian Hammond Brown and illustrator Julie Diver will preview their new title, written in Scots – McShoogle an’ the Woogles  Save the Haggis!

The free event, which takes place from 1.30 to 3.30pm, is aimed at children aged 4-8, who must be accompanied by an adult. Signed copies of the book will be on sale.

Meanwhile, anyone signing up for OnFife’s Facebook reading group can expect the unexpected during Book Week.

Library staff will be challenging group members to read adventurously during this free, five-day online reading extravaganza.

From Monday to Friday (13-18) November, library staff will be reading a short story each evening at 6pm.

After the reading finishes, there will be a short, moderated chat where group members can share their thoughts on each night’s story.

The sessions are open to all followers of the OnFife library Facebook page – and the first 50 people who apply to take part will receive a goody bag.

Lastly, anyone who takes part in OnFife’s popular Reading Challenge has the chance to win a fabulous hamper full of books and other goodies.

The Challenge will run for the whole of November and the lucky winner will be drawn at the beginning of December.

“We’re daring people to read differently during Book Week,” says OnFife’s Digital Engagement Coordinator Christine Cook. “If, for instance, you’re a die-hard crime reader, then why not give biographies a go?”

“And, if you’re always drawn to non-fiction, then how about fantasy epics for a change? Or maybe you only read stories in print? Now’s the time to take an audio option.”
