Admin History

The Abbeyfield Society is a national charity that provides sheltered housing and care homes. At a meeting held on 16 December 1968 attended by representatives of the three Church of Scotland Churches in Leven who later comprised the Executive Committee it was decided to form an Abbeyfield Society in Leven. In April 1969 the Abbeyfield Society Leven Ltd, a company limited by guarantee, was registered. Considerable time and effort were expended on obtaining finance and on finding suitable premises at a reasonable price. Eventually Shotley House in Forman Road became available in May 1970 and was considered suitable subject to extensive alterations. Leven Burgh Council agreed to provide a loan to finance the purchase and alterations and advice was sought on improvement grants, The house was acquired from 1st March 1971 and it was decided that it would be known as Abbeyfield House, Leven. A House Committee was formed in November 1971. A Housekeeper was engaged from 7th February 1972. All rooms except one were let by March 1972 and an Open Day was held which was attended by approximately 600 people. These are the minutes of the Executive Committee meetings and annual general meetings of the Abbeyfield Society Leven Ltd from November 1972 to February 1998. The house closed around 2006. The money within Leven Abbeyfield through both the sale of the property and investments was donated to Kirkcaldy Abbeyfield for their Dementia Centre.
