A Discussion Event with Dr Martyn Pickersgill, The University of Edinburgh

The event will begin with a talk by Dr Martyn Pickersgill, a sociologist at The University of Edinburgh. Martyn has studied the history of the DSM and is currently undertaking a study examining debates about the future of diagnosis. The talk will include some reflections on materials held in the APA archives, as well as interviews with psychologists and psychiatrists in the US, England and Scotland.

In the second half of the event, Martyn wants to hear from you! He will facilitate discussion between audience members about their own views and experiences regarding the place of US categories in Scottish mental health and everyday life. Are these a good thing, helping people to access care and treatment and to better understand themselves and others? Or should we get rid of the DSM – and maybe psychiatric diagnosis more broadly - altogether?

This two-hour event will include refreshments
