Top job at theatre returns Lindsay to her first love

The new manager of the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy says she is delighted to be returning to her first love – theatre.

“The Adam Smith is Fife’s flagship theatre and I always said when I came here that if the opportunity came along, then this would be the job for me,” said Lindsay Mitchell.

Lindsay takes over the reins from Tony Stevens, who had been in charge at the theatre for the past two years following its refurbishment.

She has a wealth of experience in theatre, having worked for almost 30 years in management, production, marketing and community engagement roles with theatre companies, charities and cultural trusts in Scotland.

“There is nothing quite like sharing the buzz of the theatre with a live audience and that’s why I wanted this job,” she said.

“I first visited the Adam Smith for meetings and then came along to see a show and I was very impressed by the venue and everything it offers to its community in Kirkcaldy and the whole of Fife. That’s something I’m very excited to be a part of now.”

For the past eight months Lindsay has been Assistant Area Manager for four of OnFife’s libraries in north east Fife.

“I’ve loved working in the libraries but I’ve missed working in theatre. It’s not just the shows but the setting and the whole theatre experience,” she said.

“Sitting in the audience and seeing the world from someone else’s point of view or being transported into a story you would otherwise not get the chance to hear about is magical.”

Among the highlights of her career so far have been touring a theatre production in China, helping to resurrect the old Hippodrome Theatre in Bo’ness into a flourishing community venue and introducing a ‘pay it forward’ scheme to allow families who would otherwise not be able to afford to go to a pantomime to do so.

“My love for the theatre started with my parents taking me along to the pantomime and we used to go to the King’s Theatre in Glasgow at Christmas and the Cumbernauld theatre in its early days,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to working with the team at the Adam Smith Theatre and getting involved with the groups who use the venue and, of course, meeting the audiences.”

With an auditorium with a busy programme of professional shows and local amateur group productions, function suites, meeting rooms, the Design Suite community hub and the Spinning Top café and bar, there is a busy time ahead as Lindsay takes on the job – not to mention preparing for the busiest time of the year with the panto Beauty and the Beast in December.
