You might not think that this phone looks very ‘mobile’! How big is your phone in comparison?

Motorola experimented with cellular technology in the early 1970s and produced some prototype mobile phones, but it wasn’t until 1983, that they produced the world's first hand portable mobile phone, the Motorola 8000X. It was a symbol of a new way of communicating. Unfortunately it came with a price tag of £3000!

Nicknamed ‘The Brick’, the early mobile phone was far from what we would consider portable these days. Look at the size of the charger!
