Recreation – D’Inverno’s Lighter

This promotional lighter was made for D’Inverno’s ice-cream shop, one of many Italian family businesses in Dunfermline in the 1920s.

Given that it’s not one of the warmer countries in the world, Scotland has a surprising number of ice-cream producers! This trend was established as early as the 1880s, when Italians began traveling to Scotland for work to escape poverty at home.

Until late into the twentieth century, every town in Fife boasted an independent ice-cream maker, and Dunfermline was home to several Italian café businesses, including D’Invernos.
