Much-loved Fife paintings on loan to support exhibition

19 June 2026 2 min read

Ten of the most famous and much-loved paintings from the Fife Collection have gone ‘on tour’ to support an exhibition.

OnFife has loaned ten paintings by acclaimed Scottish Colourist S.J. Peploe to Kirkcudbright Galleries for its summer exhibition.

Fife has one of the largest collection of Peploe paintings in the country so it is not surprising it is making a major contribution to the newly opened exhibition, COLOUR: The Palette of S.J. Peploe, which brings together around 60 of his works.

Peploe’s work has been the inspiration for many artists, including the late Jack Vettriano, who said Peploe’s work Antibes was one of the works which enthralled him during his visits to Kirkcaldy Galleries in his early days.

And Michael Portillo, former politician turned television presenter, speaking at an ‘in conversation’ event with Guy Peploe, grandson of the artist, in Kirkcaldy last year, talked about how Peploe’s paintings shaped his love of art in his younger years during visits to his avid art collector grandfather’s home in the town.

Nicola Wilson, OnFife Collections Development Manager, attended the opening of the exhibition in Kirkcudbright.

She said: “We are extremely lucky to have over 40 artworks by the artist in our collections and we were delighted to be able to lend some of these beautiful paintings to Kirkcudbright Galleries for their exhibition.

“But that doesn’t mean visitors to our venues will miss out – we currently have Peploe paintings on display in Kirkcaldy Galleries and also in the Living Colour exhibition at St Andrews Museum.”
