Keryn’s wondrous creatures are World Book Day winners.

27 April 2021

If you’re passing by the woods today, you might just catch sight of Keryn Hill’s fantastic, prizewinning creatures.

The Leuchars Primary pupil’s tale of magical, tree-dwelling beasties has scooped top prize in a writing competition organised by OnFife Libraries for Word Book Day.

Nine-year-old Keryn’s story, and her accompanying artwork, caught the imagination of competition judge, Dunshalt-based writer and artist Jenni Gudgeon,

Jenni led an online workshop via the OnFife Virtual LibrarYAY page, which was open to all Fife primary schools. Pupils were challenged to create a mythical creature and write a magical story about their creations.

Keryn’s winsome creatures – the Pharnomes – are fast, funny and they love playing tig and hide and seek. They live in cracks in the trees but, if you’re lucky, you just might spot their glowing eyeballs. Watch out, though – they have a knack of stealing your snacks.

Keryn was overjoyed to win a copy of Jenni’s books, Folkland Fables and Folkland Fables the Colouring Book. Said Keryn: “It was exciting and a great surprise as I’ve never won anything before.”

P5 teacher Emily Middleton added: “The whole class got involved. We went out in Leuchars and took photos, found creatures and did some writing. Everybody really enjoyed it.”
