Inspirational speakers and fun to mark International Women’s Day 2020

3 March 2020

The headline speaker at ONFife’s International Women’s Day event on Saturday is a truly inspirational woman who has overcome many challenges – including being orphaned in Yemen as a small child – to begin a new life in a new country and go on to help found an organisation working with refugees and asylum seekers.

Ethiopian-born Ibtisam Al-Farah describes herself as “self-made” and says that empowerment starts from within. Despite losing her parents as a little girl in Yemen, she worked against a conservative and tribal society to become the first female in her family to finish school, go to university, work in a male-dominated environment, drive and travel independently.

When she came to the UK in 2004 she did not speak English and was alone with no family support, no friends and no recognised work experience. Yet she went on to gain a PhD and co-founded the Development and Empowerment of Women’s Advancement project in Sheffield.

Ibtisam’s talk on women’s empowerment is just one session in a day of activities being held at Rothes Halls, Glenrothes, to mark International Women’s Day 2020.

Other speakers will include Ruth Cammies on the Open University and Jennie Lee; Queendom of Fife founder Cara Forrester in conversation with author and podcaster Lisa May Young; footballer Robyn McCafferty; a Q&A session with ONFife chief executive Heather Stuart, Ibtisam Al-Farah, Diana Sykes, director of Fife Contemporary, and Pat Greenhaugh, of Equalities Fife.

Workshops will include Mindfulness, Walk ON, line-dancing, an Introduction to Gaelic and Book Sculpture.

There will also be several stalls and information from groups such as Equalities Fife, SAJE, Macmillan Cancer Support and various therapies.

International Women’s Day 2020 is at Rothes Halls, Glenrothes, from 10am, tickets are £3 and can be bought in advance online or on the day.
