High seas adventurer helps celebrate Fife’s Deaf community on BSL Culture Day

Adventurer and campaigner Gerry Hughes, the first Deaf man to sail solo around the world, was our special guest at a day of events in March to celebrate Deaf language, culture and community in Fife.

The Glasgow-born teacher and author, who has long campaigned for educational rights for the Deaf community, took part in the British Sign Language (BSL) Culture Day 2026 held this year at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries.

Part of our work on inclusiveness and accessibility, it was our second annual BSL Culture Day event in partnership with Fife Social Care Partnership’s Deaf Communication Service.

It brought together Deaf people, families and the wider community in an inclusive and accessible environment.
