Fife invited to join Scotland for a Wee Read

24 September 2026 2 min read

Fifers are being invited to join thousands of people across Scotland to celebrate the joy of reading on Wednesday 7 October.

OnFife Libraries are supporting Wee Read, a national initiative with a simple, distinctly Scottish invitation – pick up your favourite reading material and have a ‘wee read’.

Part of the National Year of Reading 2026, people are being encouraged to join in and make one simple pledge: to read.

That could mean setting aside five minutes or 50, discovering a new author or genre, revisiting an old favourite or sharing a story with someone else. A few pages or a whole book, a comic, magazine, newspaper, recipe or poem, every read counts.

Samantha MacDougall, Community Wellbeing Manager, said: “Wee Read is a great opportunity to bring people across Fife together through the simple joy of reading. Whether you already love to read or haven’t picked up a book in a while, there is something for everyone – and our libraries are looking forward to helping you discover your next read.”

Alison Nolan, chief executive of the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC), said: “There is no right or wrong way to take part and every read counts, whether that’s a few minutes with a favourite magazine, sharing a story with a child or getting lost in a great book. With a target of 50,000 pledges, we hope people of all ages and interests will get involved, visit their local library and join Scotland for a Wee Read.”

Make your pledge at www.WeeRead.scot, visit your local library to find your next read and join Scotland for a Wee Read on 7 October.

You can also get involved on social media by sharing your reading recommendations using #WeeRead26
