Famous Fifer on display
Back in January we had an email asking if we were doing anything to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Moira Shearer, once one of the world’s most famous ballet dancers and who was born in Dunfermline.
As it happened, our Local Studies team at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries (DCLG) was planning a display but it would be a modest one as we didn’t have a great deal about Moira – made a Hollywood star with her performance in The Red Shoes – in the archives.
It turned out the sender of the email was Dai Williams, of West Sussex, who has amassed a huge collection of Moira Shearer memorabilia and, after hearing more about the Local History collection at DCLG, he has donated more than 70 items, including programmes and photographs.
As a result, a more fitting display to the famous Fifer is now on show in the museum until 23 October and played a special part in a Red Shoes Festival event at the weekend.
