What's ON

The Dunfermline Tapestry

An incredible large-scale tapestry – created by a Dunfermline community weaving project which brought together the artistic contributions of more than 700 people – has gone on show at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries.

The Dunfermline Tapestry, measuring an impressive 4m x 1.3m, celebrates the town’s rich weaving history and is made up from over 900 individual miniature woven looms, made by the hundreds of adults and children who have been involved in the project.

Work started on the Dunfermline Tapestry just weeks before Covid-19 hit and the project, which has been funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, had to come up with inventive ways to continue.

Bethany Snaddon, local weaver and designer of the project, said: “This project has been a wonderful way for us to connect to our community in Dunfermline and celebrate its rich history in weaving.  Bringing everyone’s individual creativity into this collective tapestry has been an amazing experience and we are so proud of everyone’s contributions.

“We want to thank everyone involved for their support and participation in this project and we hope everyone enjoys the exhibition.”

When the many participants go along to the exhibition they will be helped to find their loom in the tapestry by checking the name lists displayed. There is also an activity sheet to accompany the exhibition so children can enjoy fun challenges and activities when they visit.
