Shoplifters (2018)

Presented in partnership with Film Hub Scotland, Shoplifters is the award-winning drama from acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda. Living on the fringes of society in Tokyo, a family survives through a combination of low-paid work and petty theft. When they take in a young girl who appears to have nowhere else to go, their close-knit household grows stronger, but hidden secrets soon begin to surface.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, Shoplifters is a moving and thought-provoking exploration of love, family and belonging. With warmth, compassion and emotional depth, the film challenges traditional ideas of what defines a family and offers a powerful reflection on human connection in modern society.
