A Fresh, Modern Take on a Comic Classic
This riotous comic satire on Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice is presented in a brand-new production by Fran Stafford, who transports the action into the modern day with a new translation by Budd Ross. Featuring choreography by Ashleigh Butchart, this imaginative production blends timeless music with a contemporary twist.
A Story of Love, Gods and Mischief
The story follows Eurydice and her husband Orpheus, an unhappy couple trapped in a failing marriage. After Eurydice dies unexpectedly and is led into the underworld by her lover—Pluto in disguise—Orpheus is relieved to be rid of her. However, persuaded by a media influencer that indifference could damage his reputation, he embarks on a reluctant journey to rescue her.
Meanwhile, the gods of Olympus, reimagined as residents of a luxurious Las Vegas penthouse, find their comfortable lives under threat from public scrutiny. Jupiter sets his sights on Eurydice for reasons of his own, while Eurydice discovers that the underworld is less a place of torment than a lively nightclub she is reluctant to leave. As Orpheus finally catches up with her, the gods conspire to ensure his rescue attempt ends in failure.

Filled with joyful melodies, witty humour and unforgettable music, the score includes the world-famous Can-Can and elegant Minuet, making this a thoroughly entertaining evening for opera lovers and newcomers alike.
