International Women’s Day 2022

OnFife is looking to help ‘break the bias’ with its International Women’s Day (IWD) activities this month.

Next Tuesday (8 March) writer Marie Louise Cochrane will be hosting an online workshop called Menopause: Creating a Destination No Matter the Journey and drawing on the stories, poems and inspiration of women who have something meaningful to say on the subject. This will be the start of a series of workshops throughout March.  check our website for further details.

The theme of IWD 2022 is #Break the Bias and Local Studies have turned to the past for inspiration. They will be sharing a new blog about Vonda Sturrock, a missionary who came from Dunfermline and who is being researched by a volunteer. There will also be posts about forgotten female Fife authors on the OnFife Archives Facebook page.

At The Community Gallery in Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries, Consciously Rising is a new exhibition opening on Saturday (5 March) featuring work produced by a group of women brought together by the pandemic.

Looking further ahead to May, a forthcoming exhibition40 over 40, at the FifeSpace Gallery at Rothes Halls will also be celebrating women with fascinating photographic portraits which are the result of photo shoots taken by Rachel Watson.

SAT 5 MARCH – CONSCIOUSLY RISING

Consciously Rising is a new exhibition opening on Saturday (5 March) featuring work produced by a group of women brought together by the pandemic.

The group used feminist consciousness-raising in discussions and the works include very personal explorations of identity. Artist Helen de Main led the group and the exhibition is part of her PhD research at the Glasgow School of Art in partnership with Glasgow Women’s Library.

Helen said: “It’s been fascinating to see how group members translated our discussions into artworks, bringing these together whilst also bringing their own distinctive creative voice to the works.”

Consciously Rising will run from Saturday 5 March until Sunday 1 May.

TUES 8 MARCH – MENOPAUSE: CREATING A POSITIVE DESTINATION WHATEVER THE JOURNEY

Join storyteller and writer Marie Louise Cochrane, for a workshop for those approaching, experiencing, or finding themselves on the other side of Menopause.

For many of us the Menopause can be a difficult and mysterious thing, we can struggle with it on our own, knowing little about the process, except the negative aspects of what others have experienced before us.

But is this the only way?

Drawing on the stories, poems and inspiration of women who have something meaningful, honest and positive to say on the subject, we will hear about different perspectives on the Menopause from others who have used their creativity, as a way of dealing with this time of life. Participants will be invited to reflect on different aspects of Menopause with writing prompts to both reflect on their own experience, and to imagine other versions of it, for themselves and for other women.

Bring a pen and paper or whatever helps you write, a cuppa, and your imagination, as we explore what the Menopause might currently mean for us, and also what it could mean.

Information and details of how to join the online group will be sent via email at 9am on the day of the session. Keep an eye on your inbox! Please do check your junk/spam folders.  Book here.

MAY  EXHIBITION – 40 over 40

Looking further ahead to May, a forthcoming exhibition40 over 40, at the FifeSpace Gallery at Rothes Halls will also be celebrating women with fascinating photographic portraits which are the result of photo shoots taken by Rachel Watson.

“It seems the world would have us believe that women get less valuable as they age and become ‘invisible, but in my experience these are the very people who are bravest, funniest, smartest, strongest, kindest,” said Rachel.

We have been through a lot and left behind the personas we once wrapped around ourselves thinking them normal and necessary.

The 40 over 40 project gives women the opportunity to experience the most epic version of themselves. On a Harley, painted in glitter, swimming like a mermaid, as a forest fairy, a power suitwearing icon. The experience of the photo shoot is transformational. The exhibition is the final step.

40 over 40 opens on Monday 30 May.
