Markinch Co-operative Society started as a bread society in 1869, with premises in Commercial Street. In 1886 the Society moved to the High Street, Markinch. The Society later added stores in Windygates, Thornton, Coaltown of Balgonie, Kennoway, Freuchie and Falkland. (For more information see Old Markinch by William Fiet, 1998).
