Iolanthe is one of the lightest and most endearing of comic operas. Gilbert’s libretto, in which he frequently lampoons the House of Lords as ineffective, privileged and dim-witted, also pokes fun at the party system and many other political institutions in a magnificently contemporary way.
Sullivan’s score is full of well-known songs including ‘The Law is the True Embodiment’, ‘When Britain Really Ruled the Waves’ and the Lord Chancellor’s classic patter number simply known as ‘The Nightmare Song’.
